Academic Writing Skills is intended for academics and other professionals in both government and private institutions. It intends to develop and enhance their competency and confidence in academic literacy. It is therefore important for them to acquire the academic literacy skills that will enable them to become effective thinkers, speakers readers and writers in an academic and professional context and acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes which will act as tools for life-long learning as academics and professionals.
The academics and other professionals are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of academic study and an understanding of academic expectations during their tertiary study. They are also expected to demonstrate discipline, creativity and enthusiasm towards their own learning. They are expected to demonstrate a willingness to accept and value criticisms and corrections and to take these challenges as stepping stones towards becoming a good academic or professional. They are expected to demonstrate attentiveness, appreciation, care and patience in their academic study.
The main modules for the students to study in this book are namely: vocabulary acquisition and use, building academic literacy, writing for academic purposes and functional grammar in context. The content and activities are incorporated into the four-module in this course.
It is crucial for the reader to read each module thoroughly in order to understand the content adeptly. This exercise will then prepare the reader to be able to do the activities for each module. The activities must be done so as to acquire the necessary skills that are embedded in that module.
