Poetry is a style of writing that uses a formal organisation and is often divided up into lines or stanzas. It is also an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choice so as to evoke an emotional response.
A poem is to be read for its message. The message is hidden in the poem. The message is to be found by treating the words as symbols which naturally do not mean what they say but stand for something else. You have to interpret every single word to appreciate and enjoy the poem.
Today people believe that poetry does indeed contain three major genres. The three writings are known as lyric, narrative and dramatic. Lyric poetry is poems that are focused on thought and emotion. Narrative poetry is a poem that tells a story. Dramatic poetry is written in verse that is meant to be spoken. It generally tells a story and can also simply portray a situation.
