Oxford Mathematics Student Book 5A Grade 5 is part of the new reformed mathematics program designed and written for use in Grade 5 classes in Community and Primary schools throughout Papua New Guinea.
The core materials consist of two student books called Grade 5 Mathematics Student Book 5A and Grade 5 Mathematics Student Book 5B. They are accompanied by the Grade 5 Mathematics Teacher's Resource Book. They replace the MACS series now in use.
In the Mathematics program, students are first taught mathematics by using real objects. Later, the students will use pictures of objects. Finally, the students will use number symbols to represent these objects. Always allow your students to use real objects any longer. Remember, when students use real objects, they will understand mathematics better. This program also encourages the students to solve their own problems and make their own decisions with confidence. In order to learn these skills, the students should talk about what they are doing in every lesson. Since learning is most effective when it has meaning and is enjoyable, allow the students to use the language that they are most comfortable with.
However, in grade 5 more English should be used together with the vernacular and other languages to aid understanding of new and difficult concepts.
Finally, the National Department of Education wants teachers to be flexible in programming and timetabling to cater for the different abilities of students and multigrade teaching situations. This book shows you some strategies to help satisfy these needs.
